Top tips to consider when hiring wedding entertainers

Original wedding entertainment ideas are sometimes hard to think of, given that there are many people to consider on your special day, entertainment for all ages is a must. Wedding entertainers (especially a wedding magician), are great value for money and provide long lasting, unique memories.

Check your magician’s credentials!

It is important to ensure that your wedding magician is accredited and has membership of recognised professional bodies. Examples of these are The Magic Circle, The International Brotherhood of Magicians or Equity. If you are planning on hiring wedding entertainers to keep the children amused, then it is vital that they have been validated by the criminal record bureau, known in the trade as being CRB checked. It’s also worth checking that the magician, entertainer, or agent you book through, has public liability insurance.

When is it best for a wedding entertainer, such as a magician to perform?

Wedding entertainers will usually perform during the drinks reception and when the photos are being taken, as there is often a lot of hanging around so it’s good to keep people entertained and upbeat. Another great time to keep people entertained is in between the courses of the wedding breakfast being served, never when people are eating though as they need to enjoy their meal!

If your wedding entertainer is a magician, and there are lots of children around, it is recommended that they are in a separate room during the speeches so they can have their own special show – this also gives the speechmakers a little more freedom with their stories!

Considerations when hiring a wedding magician

Always try to make sure that there is enough room for everyone to be comfortable whilst a performer is moving around – you don’t want them bumping into waiters, waitresses or even guests! For a wedding magician to really work, the magic should be close-up, an illusionist just wouldn’t work; a wedding isn’t a stage show so keep it close and personal.

What makes a good wedding entertainer?

Wedding entertainers, especially wedding magicians, should be outgoing, gregarious and excellent at getting people involved. The sign of an outstanding magician is one who has the ability to spot the people who don’t know too many other guests at the wedding and can bring them together for a trick or two so as to get them talking like they were old friends!

It may seem like an unusual wedding entertainment idea but a magician is an excellent way to keep the little ones busy during a long day. Your magician should ideally be walking around the tables trying to make sure that the children are involved in a game or, if there is enough room, involved in making balloon models. ‘Story Magic’ (card tricks that involve a story, for example the teddy bear’s picnic) is perfect for engaging very young guests. Balloon modelling, plate spinning and things with lots of big and colourful objects are also a big hit with the little ones.
