Profile Information

With an illustrious 30-year history and an extensive repertoire Merton Concert Band specialises in big band favourites, show music and light classics. The band's universal appeal has cultivated a loyal following of regular listeners, young and old.

Based in Wimbledon and formed in 1981, Merton Concert Band was the brainchild of a former mayor of the London Borough of Merton. The band had strong links with the famous Mantovani Orchestra through its star trumpeter, Stan Newsome, who was the founder conductor of the band. Sadly Stan is no longer with us but the band still embraces his philosophy that the audience should be entertained, not educated.

With a diverse repertoire including more than 300 pieces of music - anything from Cabaret to Coppelia, Billy Joel to Dave Brubeck, or Duke Ellington to Sammy Davis Junior, and everything in between – the Merton Concert Band can arrange a programme suitable for any occasion and are the prefect accompaniment to garden parties, fetes, corporate events, park engagements and other social gatherings.

Previous prestigious locations and clients in and around London where they have played include Westminster Abbey Gardens, Merton Abbey Mills (for its annual birthday celebrations), Canbury Gardens in Kingston, Mitcham Carnival, Sidcup for the Musician’s Union get-together and Elys Department store.
